Update On The Farm to School Network in Maui

October is National Farm to School Month which celebrates a National Movement that humbly began with a handful of schools in the 1990’s. The movement grew into a National Farm to School Network in 2007 and has spread now into all 50 states. There are thousands of schools, school gardens, food education facilities, farms, communities and state and county organizations are taking part in bringing healthy local organic ingredients to cafeterias nationwide.

The First Meeting of a New Kind of Coalition

On September 28, 2017 a new model of Farm to School collaboration and partnership was born for the island of Maui. Sponsored by the Hawai’i Department of Health and hosted by the Maui County of Economic Development, members of a wide section of Maui food systems came together to create a strategic alliance and a new coalition to make Farm to School a centerpiece of action in our community for the health of our children.

Pomaika'i Teacher Planning Retreat

On July 18th, I had the chance to join Rae and 12 of the teachers from Pomaika’i who will be spearheading their next 3-year educational theme roll-out , “the wellness of the ‘aina (land) is the wellness of the people”, the school garden being the centerpiece for the S.T.E.A.M. education curriculum they are planning – social sciences, technology, engineering and design, arts and math.
